Scrap metal guide

A practical scrap metal recycling guide.

Learn how to identify and prepare common scrap metals, what affects indicative value and what information helps us assess your material faster.

Start with the basics

Know what you have before requesting a quote.

Scrap metal is assessed by more than weight alone. Metal type, grade, cleanliness, attachments and the size of the load can all affect how it is handled and valued. Clear photos and a useful description help Opex give you a more relevant first response.

You do not need to be a metal expert. Separate obvious material types where practical, keep hazardous or unknown items aside, and ask us before travelling or arranging pickup.

Indicative value

What affects scrap metal pricing?

Scrap values move with market conditions. Opex assesses the actual material before confirming current information; website examples are not fixed-price offers.

01

Metal type and grade

Copper, aluminium, brass, stainless steel, lead and ferrous steel have different grades and market values.

02

Condition and contamination

Paint, insulation, plastic, fittings and mixed attachments can change the grade or preparation required.

03

Quantity and weight

A few items, a trailer load and an ongoing commercial stream each require a different assessment.

04

Current market conditions

Commodity markets change, so contact Opex for current indicative pricing rather than relying on an old online figure.

Prepare your enquiry

Three details make assessment easier.

  1. 01

    Show the complete load

Take one wide photo, then add a closer view of labels, cut ends, cables, fittings or mixed material.

  2. 02

    Describe the quantity

Estimate the number of items, bins, approximate weight or whether the material fills a ute, trailer or larger area.

  3. 03

    Explain access and location

If pickup may be needed, include the suburb, access constraints and whether lifting or loading assistance could be required.

Common questions

Before you recycle.

Should I strip or clean the metal first?

Separate obvious metal types and remove loose non-metal material where it is safe and practical. Ask before doing time-consuming stripping, cutting or dismantling because requirements differ by material.

Can Opex identify metal from a photo?

Photos can help with an initial assessment, but the final type, grade and value may only be confirmed after the material is inspected.

Can I get a price from an old online list?

Online lists can become outdated quickly. Contact Opex with current photos and quantity details for information relevant to your load.
